Aching Heart

I was separated from a very close friend for a few days. After having spent the majority of my time with them, we had to part for a few days. I didn’t really realise how important their presence was to me, or how much of my heart they truly occupied, until today.

When our usual, daily dedicated time arrived, I felt my heart yearning for their company.

Now, bear in mind, I have only recently re-developed this relationship. Previously, I had not dedicated much time or attention to my companion. May Allāh forgive me.

Not too long ago, I was so close to my Qur’an, with daily recitation, listening, and sharing beautiful qirāʾāt with others. And just like the ebb and flow of the tide, my relationship temporarily dwindled away.

That was until one of my siblings replayed an old classic qirāʾah, which was one of my childhood favourites to listen to.

It sparked that hidden longing and emptiness in my heart, slowly guiding me back.

It made me realise that, whilst understanding the Qur’an is very important, listening to the Qur’an also affects the heart. The words of Allāh are so powerful that, simply by listening, they can open the heart and guide it to a place of sukūn and tranquillity, silencing the overwhelming hustle and bustle of our worldly life.

So sometimes, even if we try to muffle the longing, our souls need the Qur’an to realign and find clarity in this haze-filled world.

Even if it means just listening
